Overview

Bathrooms: what's involved and who it's for

What it is

Our bathroom service covers installations and refurbishments of bathrooms, en-suites, shower rooms and wet rooms. Work includes strip-out, repairs, plumbing, electrics, ventilation, waterproofing, tiling and fitting sanitaryware.

Who it's for

For homeowners in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire and surrounding counties updating a bathroom or adding washing facilities within an extension, loft conversion, garage conversion or new build.

When you need it

A bathroom may need replacing when fittings deteriorate, leaks appear or the layout no longer suits your household. Adding an en-suite or shower room requires early consideration of drainage, ventilation and available space.

Why a professional matters

Waterproofing, drainage falls and sound walls and floors are largely hidden once a bathroom is finished. Coordinating the building work with the fitting helps address damage and prepare wet areas before tiles and sanitaryware are installed.

Get it right first time

What goes wrong when it's done badly

Water escaping behind tiles, around a tray or through a pipe joint can damage floors and ceilings before it becomes visible. Replacing the fittings without assessing the underlying room risks covering up the cause.

Risks and rising costs

  • Leaks reaching joists, floors and ceilings below.
  • Condensation and mould from inadequate ventilation.
  • Tiling over weak or uneven surfaces.
  • Poor drainage falls in showers and wet rooms.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating tiles and grout as a substitute for waterproofing.
  • Choosing fittings without checking drainage routes.
  • Ignoring damaged substrates beneath the old finish.
  • Not planning access while the only bathroom is out of use.

In detail

Bathrooms explained

From replacing a family bathroom to adding a wet room, the room's structure and services determine what is practical.

Bathroom refurbishment and new layouts

Keeping fittings in their existing positions can reduce service alterations. Moving a bath, basin or toilet needs drainage and supply routes checked first. We assess both options against the room and your brief.

En-suites, shower rooms and cloakrooms

Smaller rooms need careful planning of clearances, access and pipe routes. We fit en-suites, shower rooms and downstairs cloakrooms, including within loft and garage conversions.

Wet rooms and waterproofing

Wet areas require suitable substrates and waterproofing, often called tanking, before the finish is applied. Wet-room floors also need falls towards the drain and a build-up suited to the structure underneath.

Plumbing and drainage

A new position for sanitaryware may require changes to waste pipes, supply pipes or connections. Drainage falls and access for maintenance are considered before walls and floors are closed up.

Ventilation and electrical work

Extraction helps manage moisture. Lighting, electrical fittings and any powered equipment must be appropriate for their position in a bathroom, with the work coordinated to the applicable requirements.

Bathrooms in older homes

Strip-out can reveal damp, weakened floors or uneven walls. We assess and address agreed repairs before fitting, rather than laying a new finish over damaged material.

Using your home during the work

If this is your only bathroom, we discuss the practical arrangements and sequence before starting. The period without facilities depends on the work involved and what alternatives the property allows.

Working with BUILT

What to expect from start to finish

A survey before any price

Every project starts with a visit. On properties you already own, the site survey is free. If you're still buying, our pre-purchase estimate costs £250 + VAT and is refunded in full on your first invoice if you book the work with us. Either way, you get a clear view of what's involved before committing.

Paying only for progress

We don't ask for an upfront deposit. Instead, work is invoiced fortnightly based on an agreed percentage of completed work per item. You can see exactly what you're paying for on every invoice, and your money stays with you until the work is done.

One team, one point of contact

BUILT has 25 tradespeople on the tools and 4 office staff, working from our own units and offices at Linton Barns, Ross-on-Wye. Keeping trades in-house means fewer handovers, fewer gaps in the programme, and one company accountable for the result.

Protection once we've finished

New build houses carry a 10-year warranty; extensions, conversions and all other work carry a 1-year warranty. We're CHAS accredited and hold £10M combined public and employers' liability insurance throughout the build.
